Your Covering Letter

How to stand out with a good covering letter

There are many different times when you should use a covering letter. The most obvious is when you are applying for a specific job, but others are when you are sending your CV to a recruitment agency to register with them, and when you write to an employer enquiring about jobs.

Applying for a vacancy

It is always important to include a covering letter for every application you make. The covering letter will be the first thing an employer/recruitment consultant will look at, so use this opportunity to sell yourself and make your application more unique. Read the job description and highlight the skills they are looking for. Your covering letter should include an introduction of yourself, any relevant experience you have (which you read in the job description) and why you are the best candidate for this vacancy.

To a recruitment agency

When you register with a recruitment agency, ensure that you include a covering letter to state what your experience has been and what jobs you are interested in. Give information such as how far you are willing to travel, salary expectations, and notice of your current role. All of this will assist your recruitment consultant to find you a role.

Enquiring about vacancies to an employer

If you are writing to introduce yourself to a company you want to work for to request information about their vacancies, ensure that you include why you want to work for this company. What can you offer them as a member of the team, your experience that may be of interest to them? Make it memorable, if they don’t have roles at the time then ask them to keep you on file.
